On the last evening of Rhythm Formulas for Dance Films, we can get an insight to the work of the composer and film director, Thierry De Mey, who one of the most significant personalities of the dance film genre. A selection from his films created with acknowledged choreographers, such as choreographers Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Wim Vandekeybus and his sister Michèle Anne De Mey will be presented.

“The great difficulty of the dance film is precisely to achieve the fusion between different disciplines, which are functioning in sometimes divergent dimensions: the timing of the performance with the presence shared by the audience and the interpreter versus the cinematographic illusive elliptical timing. However, success is measured by the capacity of synthesis in a single »perceived thing« where the heterogeneous elements merge.

At the crossroads of these three disciplines you’ll find »movement«; over time I discovered that this »kinetic « active concept, is precisely the »red thread« that connects all aspects of my work. In its most radical form I saw myself in 2002 asking a conductor to turn his back to the orchestra and to perform in front of the audience a »choreography« for hands in silence… it’s called: »Silence must be!«. Today is one of my most performed pieces.” – Thierry de Mey

Thierry De Mey is the key expert and lecturer of Dance Film Workshop 2021 in Budapest.
